Small intestine contains millions of tiny finger like projections called villi. Villi are richly supplied with blood vessels which carry the nutrients from the absorbed food to each and every cell of the body.

The small intestine is the most important organ of digestive system because it carries the major digestion and absorption of digestion food. Food is exposed to several digestive enzymes in small intestine only. Ileum of small intestine has a large surface area that helps in absorption of digested food.

It transfers the food to liver so that extra glucose gets converted to glycogen it transfers through hepatic portal vein
