In 1775, Edward Jenner as studying the relationship between smallpox and cowpox which is almost a harmless disease.
He found out that when a body is exposed to cowpox, the same body became immune to smallpox as well.
There were several experiments conducted and a vaccine was found out which made the body totally immune to smallpox.
