It is because at higher temperature kinetic energy of the molecules are high. Hence the rate of diffusion is high while at low temperature the rate of diffusion is low . Hence one may have to go closer to smell the food.

The smell of hot sizzling food reaches severed meters away, as the particles of hot food have more kinetic energy and hence the rate of diffusion is more than the particles of cold food.
