the kinetic energy is high in the hot particles .thus the rate of diffusion is also high.

but when a partical is cool the rate of diffusion is low hence we have to go closer to smell it

When food is hot, diffusion is more. But in cold food diffusion is slow. Hence to get the smell from cold food we have to go close.
