As a result of contact with Western society and education, the desperate need for social and religious change that started in the early nineteenth century emerged. For educated Indians who started working systematically to remove them, the weakness & decay of the Indian society were evident.

Explanation:

  • In Indian history there were some outstanding reformers, who, with their philosophy and great work for humanity, not only laid the foundations of modern India but also influenced the world. They were no longer ready to accept Hindu society's traditions, practices, & beliefs that they had observed for centuries.
  • Social Reformers believed in the idea, irrespective of age , gender , race, caste or religion, of democracy and of dignity among all human beings. A number of conservative, patriarchal & bureaucratic institutions were targeted and social change movements were initiated to free Indian people from their shackles. While many of the Reformers were primarily for men, the reform movement aimed to boost Indian women's status, as well
  • Some of the reformers had taken up the problems of trying to break the jinx of the prevailing caste system and some had fought for the education of girls & widows' remarriage. For  example, Raja Rammohan Roy,  known as the " Father of the Indian Renaissance, was the central character of this "cultural awakening". He had fought tirelessly against social evils like polygamy, sati, child marriage, caste discrimination & women infanticide. Another reformer named Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was a staunch supporter of women’s education, and  enhancing the condition of widows
  • As a social reformer Vivekananda spread the message of peace and brotherhood of & stressed that religious tolerance would contribute to peace & harmony in the world. Dayanand Saraswati thought believed the Vedas had the wisdom imparted to people by God and that their study alone was able to overcome all social problems.  Then he propagated the slogan "Return to the Vedas." Swami Dayanand vigorously criticized these rituals by arguing that the Vedas did not mention the untouchability, or child marriages, & subjugation of women.
