In the story -old Man At The Bridge by Ernest Hemingway the soldier is the narrator of the story .The story has been written during the time of Spanish Civil War.The soldier is in duty to look after how far the enemy has advanced. While looking for the enemies he came across an old man who came from San Carlos. He had left his animals which were a pair of pigeons, a cat and two goats. Old man feels pathetic for his animals but the soldier is a kind hearted man , and converse with the old man during his loneliness. He consoles the old man by saying that the cat can look after themselves and pigeons will fly but the old man feels pathetic for the two goats which symbolises bad fate, just Like the old man who have now no one to look after him. The old man even suggests the old man to catch a truck and go to Brazil. Thus the soldier maintained his duty properly as a soldier and also as a good friend who take pains to assure others.
