The solubility of sodium chloride in water at 27 C is 22.7g in 100ml of water.The density of water is 1.0g per ml.Calculate the concentration of sodium chloride in terms of mass per cent when it is dissolved in 500 ml of water

Density = mass/volume

density of water = 1 gm/ml

volume of water = 500 ml

mass of water = 1 X 500 gm = 500 gm

Solubility of NaCl = 22.7 gm/100 ml water.

In 500 ml water, mass of NaCl present will be

= (22.7 X 500)/100 = 113.5 gm

Therefore mass percent of NaCl = (113.5/500) X 100% = 22.7% .
