The sound of an explosion on the surface of a lake
is heard by a boat man 100 m away and by a diver
100 m below the point of explosion.
(1) Who would hear the sound first boat man or
diver?
(ii) Give a reason for your answer in part (i).
(ii) If sound takes time t to reach the boat man, how
much time approximately does it take to reach the
diver?

(1) Diver will hear the sound first because sound travels faster in liquids             than air.

(2)Done

(3)Speed of sound in air= 346 m/s

    Time taken to reach the boat = 100/346 = 0.28901 seconds

    Speed of sound in water = 1531 m/s

    Time taken to reach the diver = 100/1531 = 0.06531 seconds

         Difference = 0.28901-0.06531

                             = 0.2237 seconds
