The given statement is false because the space charge region in a p-n junction is referred to as depletion region or depletion layer.

The depletion layer in a p-n junction is the layer in which the mobile charge carriers from both the semiconductors are forced by the electric fields or have been diffused away.

This depletion layer is formed at the metallurgical junction. This is the region of immobile ionized atoms.

The electrons from n side are forced by the electric fields and the same happens with the holes of the p side which are forced out of the side and are collected at this junction creating a counter current in this region.
