Napoleon said: " It was the Spanish Ulcer that ruined me."

  • The Spanish Guerrillas along with the British troops who had successfully liberated Portugal kept the French pinned down in Spain for many years. Spain refused to go away and hence it was called “the Spanish ulcer”.

  • Napoleon's main aim was to invade Spain and get more territory for himself. Spain's royals were corrupt during this time and so he expected that people will be very happy to have a new ruler sitting on the throne.
  • Therefore, he attacked Spain in 1808 but his small army was easily defeated by Spain with the help of the English army in 1808. The Spanish attack proved harmful and hence Napoleon himself accepted to be an 'ulcer' for him.
  • During this time, a strong alliance between Spain and Great Britain took place. Spain was the first ever country  which showed defiance to the French.
  • French people were during this time, because Napoleon entered the Spanish territory in order to get more land, money, power, and to spread the French culture.
  • He thought the Spanish people should be happy to have a chance to live the French culture.
