The buoyant force, Fb = ρ•V•g

Where ρ is the density of the fluid, V is the displaced volume of fluid (same as volume of object), and g is the acceleration due to gravity (9.8 m/s^2).

So, here we have the weight of the ice, of volume V:

W = g(V x 917kg/m^3) = g( 917V) kg/m^2

The weight of the man is 80kg, so the total is

Wt = g(917V + 80) kg

Fb = ρ•V•g

So g(917V + 80) = ρ•V•g

917V + 80 = 1000V

63V = 80, so V = 80/63 = 1.27m^3

Since the block of ice is 0.25m thick, the area must be 1.27/0.25 = 5.08m^2
