Given,

Speeds of a boat along the current and against the current are 12 km/hr and 6 km/hr respectively.

Downstream speed = 12km/hr

Upstream speed = 6km/hr

Speed of the current = ½ × (downstream speed - upstream speed)

Speed of the current = ½ × (12 - 6) = 6/2 = 3

∴ Speed of the current is 3km/hr.

or

The speed of boat in still water = u = 10 km/hr.

The speed of current = v = 2 km/hr

⇒ The downstream of boat = u + v = 12 km/hr

⇒ The upstream of boat = u - v = 10 - 2 = 8 km/hr
