the speed of a boat in still water is 11km/hr and the speed of the stream is x km/hr. Find in terms of x,the speed of boat upstream and the speed of boat downstream. If the boat takes 11/4 hours to go 12 km upstream and then return,find the value of x.

Let the speed of the stream = x km/hr

Speed of the boat in still water = 11 km/hr

Speed of the boat downstream = (11 + x) km/hr

Speed of the boat upstream = (11 - x) km/hr

According to the given information,

121 - x2 = 96

x2 = 25

x = 5

Rejecting negative value, as speed cannot be negative. So, x = 5.

Hence, the speed of the stream is 5 km/hr.

speed of boat in still water = 11km/hr
speed of boat upstream= (11-x)km/hr
speed of boat to go to downstream=(11+x)
distance = 12 km
time taken to go 12 km upstream = (11-x)/12
time taken to come back 12 km downstream = (11+x)/12
so total time taken= 11/4
(11-x)/12 + (11+x)/12= 11/4
solve this equation you will get ur answer
