Given: speed of light in glass, s₁ = 2x 10⁸ m/s

To Find:  Refractive index of glass, r.

Solution:

To calculate r, the formula used:

  • Refractive index, r = speed of light in vacuum(s₂)/speed of light in glass (s₁)
  •  r = s₂/s₁
  • speed of light in vacuum, s₂= 3 x 10⁸ m/s

Applying the above formula:

r =  3x 10⁸/  2x 10⁸

r = 3/2

r = 1.5

Hence the refractive index of glass is 1.5
