Question

the speed of sound depends on a number of factors what are they ?

Answer

sound take some time to travel from the sound producing body to our ears . the speed of sound tells us the rate at which sound travel from the sound producing body to our ear .

The speed of sounds depends on a number of factors these are below ;

  • the speed of sound depends on the nature of material through which it travel .

Explanation :- the speed of sound is different in different material . For example the speed of sound in different material like water air and iron is different . at room temperature the speed of sound in air is 344m/s . the speed of sound in water is about 1500m/s . and the speed of sound in iron is about 5400m/s . in general sound travel lowest in gases fast in liquid and fastest in solid .

  • the speed of sound depends on the temperature .

Explanation :- for example the speed of sound in air at a temperature of zero degree celsius is 332 metre per second . but the speed of sound in air at temperature of 20 degree celsius is 344 per second . in fact as the temperature of air Rises the speed of sound in it increases .

  • the speed of sound depends on the humidity of air .

Explanation :- for example the speed of sound is less in dry air but more in humid air in other words sound Travels lower in dry air but faster in humid air . in fact as the humidity of air increases the speed of sound through it also increase .

Additional information ;

  • sound travel a distance of 344 metre in 1 second through air at the room temperature .
  • sound travel about 5 times faster in water than in air .
  • sound travel about 15 minutes faster in iron than in air .
  • sound can travel through vacuum
  • air is necessary for the sound to travel from the object to our ear .
  • sound can travel through solid liquid and gas because the molecule of solid liquid and gas carry the sound waves from one place to another place by their vibration .
