The speed of sound in air is 320 m s -1 and in water is 1600 m s -1 . It takes 2.5 s for sound to reach a certain distance from the source placed in air. (i) Find this distance (ii) How much time will take for sound to travel the same distance in water

Explanation:

(i)

speed of sound in air = 320 m/s

It means it travels 320 m in 1 second.

Therefore it travels 320 m/s × 2.5 s in 2.5 seconds = 800m.

(Since distance=speed × time)

(ii)

Now we know the distance sound will travel in water i.e., 800 m.

And also the speed of sound in water i.e., 1600 m/s.

We know that,

SPEED = DISTANCE TRAVELLED/TIME TAKEN

Hence

TIME TAKEN = DISTANCE TRAVELLED/SPEED

So time taken= (800 m) / (1600 m/s)

= 0.5 s

Therefore sound will take 0.5 seconds to travel in water.
