The speed of sound in air is 320 ms⁻¹. and in water it is 1600 ms⁻¹.. It takes 2.5 s for sound to reach a certain distance from the source placed in air.
(i) Find this distance.
(ii) How much time will it take for sound to travel the same distance when the source is in water?

Distance will be - 800 metres

Time taken will be - 0.5 seconds

The relation to calculate is given as follows-

S = d/t

Speed is denotes by s, distance is denoted by d and time is denoted by t.

To calculate distance in for source of sound placed in air-

D = s*t

D = 320*2.5

D = 800 m.

Time taken to travel by same source in water is -

T = d/s

T = 800/1600

T = 0.5 seconds.

Thus, distance travelled by sound in air, according to given values is 400m and time taken by sound to travel same distance in water is 0.5 seconds.
