The speed of the boat in still water is 15km\hr . It can go 30 km upstream and return down stream to the original point in 4hr 30min . Find the speed of the stream

  Time=distance/speed<br />let x be the stream speed<br />relative speed at upstream= 15-x km/h(opposed)<br />relative speed at downstream= 15+x km/h(supported)<br />time needed for upstream= 30/(15-x) h<br />time needed for downstream= 30/(15+x) h<br />so, <br />4.5= {30/(15-x)}+{30/(15+x)}<br />solve it<br />and you will find x= 5km/h<br /><br />

Hey there!

Let speed of stream = x km/h

∴ Downstream speed = (15+x) km/h

∴ Upstream speed = (15-x) km/h

30/(15+x) + 30/(15-x) = 4 1/2

→ 900/225-x² = 9/2

→ 9x² = 225

→ x² = 25

→ x = 5

∴ Speed of stream = 5 km/h
