The speed-time graph below shows the journey of a train between stations.
Find;

a) the time to accelerate to a constant speed?

b) the constant speed of the train?

c) the acceleration of the train at the start of the journey?

Answer:

a) 15 seconds

b) 90 m/s

c) 6 m/s²

Explanation:

a) As you can see on the graph, the straight line or you can say the constant speed starts after 15 seconds. So, the time to accelerate to a constant speed is 15 seconds.

b) The straight line starts and the acceleration ends when the speed is 90 m/s. So, the final speed is 90 m/s. The acceleration started from 0 m/s and that is why, 0 m/s is the initial speed. Subtract the initial speed from the final speed to find out the constant speed of the train.

=> 90-0

=> 90 m/s

c) Subtract the initial speed from the final speed to find out the constant speed of the train. Then divide the constant speed of the train with the time to accelerate to a constant speed to find the acceleration of the train at the start of the journey.

=> (Final speed - Initial speed) ÷ The time to accelerate to a constant speed

=> (90-0) ÷ 15

=> 90 ÷ 15

=> 6 m/s²
