The average speed over 12 sec interval is 3.17 m/s.

The speed - time graph for the motion of a motorcycle is shown in figure.

We have to find the average speed over 12 second interval.

Concept : The average speed is the total distance by total time taken.

For speed - time graph, the total distance is found by finding the area enclosed by the graph.

Here, total distance travelled by motorcycle = area enclosed by graph

= area of rectangle + area of trapezium + area of bigger trapezium

= (2m/s) × (5s) + 1/2 (2m/s + 3m/s) × 4s + 1/2 (3m/s + 9m/s) × 3s

= 10m + 10m + 18m

= 38m

Total time taken = 12s

∴ The average speed over 12 sec interval = 38m/12s = 3.17 m/s.
