Answer:
As New Year resolutions go, Indira Gandhi's decision to divide the Congress Party was hardly new. But she was resolute in her bid to accomplish the long-expected coup. As the year moved to an end, rumblings within the party rose to an acrimonious crescendo; and the collective efforts of the numerous mediators were smashed in one fell blow with the announcement of Mrs Gandhi's national convention for Congress in New Delhi on January 1.
There was an inevitability about the crack-up which even the season's sudden cold wave could not counter. A mixed bag of Congressmen from all parts of the country braved the weather and threw in their lot with Mrs Gandhi.
