The splitting of white light into different colours on passing through a prism is called as Dispersion .

The band of 7 colours that is formed during splitting is called as Spectrum .

And thus , the phenomenon of splitting of white light into its constituent colours that is seven colours is called as Dispersion of light .

Why do we see a rainbow ?

When a water droplet which acts as a prism gets sun light passing through it which is white light forming seven constituent colours on to the sky acting as a seven coloured band which we called as rainbow .

In this way we see a rainbow on a sunny as well as rainy day .

The seven colours formed are :

  • Violet
  • Indigo
  • Blue
  • Green
  • Yellow
  • Orange
  • Red
