          I can never forget that Sunday night when I along with my friends had gone to see the football world cup final match between France and England at the Parc des Princes. The stadium was packed to capacity. The stadium looked festive with all the clourful lights and flags of France and England being waved by the supporters of their respective teams.

         Suddenly, the entire stadium echoed with a series of gunshots followed by screams and shrieks of people. People began to rush towards the exit points. The mass stampede was about to begin. Quite unexpectedly there was an announcement made from the speakers of the stadium. ‘You are requested not to panic and rush. Keep sitting on your seats. The situation is perfectly under control.’

          To everyone’s amazement, no gunshot was heard after the announcement. The match resumed and France clinched the world cup trophy. After the prize distribution ceremony, as people began streaming out of the stadium. I asked one of the security guards what those gunshots were. He replied, “Those were terrorists. But they were neutralized. The gunshots that the stadium heard were from the security forces. We had intelligence input about their presence in the stadium. We located them and neutralized them.” I was just thunderstruck at the revelation!

The Kolkata stadium looked festive as people were going to witness an interesting match. There was an Inter  School cricket match final going on in the stadium. St Peter’s school had made an astounding 150 runs and  now New Model School was batting.

They had one wicket remaining, had to take two runs and just three balls  were remaining. Thinking all this, Ram – a spectator, sat and watched Ravi, the bowler running to deliver the  ball. Everyone was excited and as he delivered the ball, everyone held his breath. No run was scored on that  ball. Then came Ravi again running and as he delivered the ball the batsman hit the ball and ran a run.

Now it  was an exciting match, thought Ram, as Ravi was a good spinner and Amit, the man who was now at the batter’s  positions was an experienced player. Ravi was delivering off-spin balls and was expected to deliver the same  this time also. Suddenly, to everyone’s surprise Ravi delivered the last ball as a leg spin.

Amit was shocked but it  being a do or die situation he just flung his bat in the air and it hit the ball. The ball flew above and Ravi saw the  ball cross the boundary line. Everyone was shocked and after a few moments the team cheered in happiness  celebrating their victory.
