The standard e.m.f. of the following cell is 0.43 V
CU Cu++ || Ag+ |Ag
(s) (1M) (1M) (s)

Given :

Cu_{(s)}  | Cu^{++}(1M) || Ag^{+}(1M) | Ag_{(s)} \\E^{o} _{Ag} = 0.800 V \\E^{o} _{cell} = 0.430 V

To Find :

The standard potential of Cu electrode, E^{o} _{Cu} .

Solution :

E^{o} _{Ag} = E^{o} _{reduction} = 0.800 V\\E^{o} _{Cu} = E^{o} _{oxidation} \\EMF = E^{o} _{cell} = 0.430V

The standard potential of the reaction is calculated as:

E^{o} _{cell} = E^{o} _{reduction} - E^{o} _{oxidation} \\0.430 = 0.800 - E^{o} _{Cu}\\E^{o} _{Cu} = 0.370 V
