The standard heat of neutralisation of an acid by a base is define as “the heat evolved when one mole of H+ ions from an acid is neutralized by one mole of OH- ions from a base to form water.” When 200 cm3 1.0 M NaOH solution was added to 300 cm3 1.0 M HCl, the temperature of the solution increases by 5.4C. Calculate the enthalpy of neutralisation from this reaction. [specific heat of water = 4.2 J/g •oC; density of solution = 1.0 g cm-3]
