For example : 1 litre water would remain 1 litre , be it in a bottle or jug . However , it shape would be according to what it is in .

Solid have both definite shape as well definite volume . Their shape remains unchanged and doesn't depend on the container in which they are fitted .

Gases have both indefinite shape and volume . They not only lose their shape according to container but also their volume .

One reason behind these behaviour of states of matter is the distance between the molecules in them .

In solid they are tightly packed , in liquid loosely packed and in gases , they are so far that they are in random motion .
