The Stegodon, whose fossil has recently been found 50km north of Saharanpur, is an extinct relative of elephant.

  • A team of forest officials recently discovered the fossil of an extinct elephant species( Proboscideans), which is said to be almost 5-8 million years old from Shivalik range in the district of Saharanpur.
  • They also discovered fossils of horses, giraffes and hippopotamus and claimed that this discovery proves the existence of dense forests and rivers in that area.
  • In the fossil of Stegodon, the third lower molar teeth( about 24 centimetres) was clearly visible along with nine developed ridges( that is why it is also termed as 'roofed tooth') and thick enamel.
  • The genus of this animal belonged to the subfamily of Stegodontinae. It was simultaneously placed in the Elephantidae as well as Stegodontidae.
