The waxy coating on the leaves of these plants helps prevent such disease and disallows the infection from entering the plant. Since floating plants are in and around water all their life spans, to ensure that there is no rotting of leaves or the stem due to so much water, the waxy coating on the leaves proves useful.

Answer:
They are covered with waxy substances as it protects them from loss of water and against harsh weather. It provides a shining surface. Shining surface slows down transpiration to some extent. It reflects back falling sunlight and reduces the heating effect on leaves. It prevents the plant from rotting.
hope this helps
