Answer:
The year 2012 will mark twenty years since the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development
(UNCED) or Earth Summit, held at Rio de Janeiro in 1992, when 108 Heads of State and Government, and representatives
from international agencies and non-governmental organizations, from across the globe, met to discuss issues
around sustainable development. The Earth Summit arrived at Agenda 21, an action plan for a sustainable future. The
world will come together once again at Rio in June 2012, at what is more commonly known as Rio+20. At this point, it
becomes extremely important to take stock of where we as a global community are in terms of our efforts at addressing
sustainability concerns.
This book takes stock of India's efforts at addressing some of its own concerns. It documents the country's evolving framework for sustainable development since the 1992 Earth Summit, assesses the achievements it has made and the existing and emerging challenges that the country faces. It highlights some of the international agreements that it has been part of and the innovative approaches adopted to tackle sustainability concerns, while also pointing to the unfinished agenda in this context.
