The stipulated period to conduct universal elections in India is five years.

  • Presidential elections are properly administered by India's Election Board.
  • All prominent members of the Lok Sabha, with the notable exception of those who may be nominated by the President of India shall be directly elected by effective means of general elections.
  • The maximum term prescribed by the constitution for central or state governments remain five years. If the government falls before the five-year term is complete, presidential elections are held again.
