The hydrochloric acid helps in killing of bacteria that may come along with our food.
It helps in making the nature of food acidic for the reaction of various enzymes for digestion like pepsin.
It also regulates the opening and closing of pyloric aperture.

The hydrochloric acid in stomach has many roles in digestive process:-

1. Sterilisation:- HCl of gastric juice sterlises food---by killing pathogens and other microbes ingested through food and water.

2. Digestion:- It has a pH of 2 which is perfect for proteases such as pepsin to break down proteins as effectively as possible.

3. Emulsification:- HCl emulsifies the food.. by digesting protein and stimulating the pancreas to produce digestive enzymes and bile...

Further........

It is also called Gastric Acid and is so strong that it can digest the stomach itself but.. the mucous membrane/ lining in stomach protects it..

Hope it helps...
