Bholi by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas is the story of a little girl named Bholi who stammered and was a slow-learner. She had fallen down from the cot in her childhood and her brain was partially damaged. She had lost her beauty to smallpox. She was neglected as a witless fool even by his parents and her sisters and brothers. Yet her life changed by the opening of an elementary school for girls in her village. Her teacher was brave and kind to her. She has offered her confidence. Without stops she made her talk. What seemed to be unlikely was done by the child. When she declined to marry Bishamber Nath, who demanded five thousand rupees cash from her father in dowry, and this way she proved to be a true heroine.

• Bholi was a girl that had been mistreated and neglected. She had pockmarks on her face making her ugly. She was also a slow learner, a retarded child and also stammered while talking.. Her parents often disregarded her, and for them she was a nuisance. When she was grown up, Bishamber sent the parents a wedding proposal.
• He was a lame, old widower with adult kids. Her parents were glad to receive the proposal. During the marriage Bishambar had asked for a Rs. 5.000 dowry for the marriage when Bishamber saw pockmarks  Bholi's face . Bholi’s father agreed.  However, this aroused  Bholi's self-respect and she refused marrying such a greedy old man, cruel and heartless. Her actions showed that she took a stand and managed to overcome social barriers. She said she would remain a spinster and to never marry.
• By educating our girl children, we can also help change social attitudes. We need to make them strong and self-confident. We can all follow the rule ' everyone is trained ' to eliminate illiteracy and to raise awareness, because only education means a better future.
