The main conflict in the story is, as said by the other educator, the conflict between Kit and her new family and the culture within which they live. Kit has lived a certain way during her life and finds her new community and family lacking in nearly every way. She is in conflict with her Uncle Matthew and with the village from the time she gets here. However, there is a second conflict in the book which is the conflict within Kit herself as she has to learn to respect other's values and opinions.
