Old Man at the Bridge
War is raging and people are trying to escape from the enemy soldiers. An old man sits at the village bridge pondering about all the poor animals left in the village under his care, while everyone is running away. He must have also felt sad to think that he alone has been asked to stay behind using the animals as a pretext because others thought of him as a burden, due to his age.
The fear of death and displacement brought about by events like war, brings out the harsh realities of human nature.
Ernest Hemingway (1899 – 1961) is the author of Old Man at the Bridge.
