It reflects the spirit of the time through the main character Jekyll, who is a renowned doctor yet is deeply unsatisfied because he has to live suppressing his real emotions and wishes because of the society. This was very very common in the Victorian era. Another evidence is the way that people go to opium dens to relax and do drugs at night. Since it was impossible to do this during the day, people would behave like wild during the night and they would hide doing this because of the society.
