Percentage (increase) in the first year = 30%

percentage (decrease) in the second year = 10%

Strength after second year = 1404

Let x be the initial strength...

then x + 30% = Strength at the end of the first year

x + 30%of x = x + 0.3x = 1.3x

and it will be the strength at the beginning of the second year...

Percentage decrease= 10%

so 1.3x - 10% = strength at the end of the second year

1.3x - 10%(1.3x) = 1404

1.3x - 0.13x = 1404

1.17x = 1404

x = 1404/1.17 = 1200 is the original/initial strength.
