It is explained on the basis of directional and non-directional nature of the sigma bond. As the s orbitals are non directional and can overlap from any side therefore s−s is quite a weak sigma bond. In contrast to this p orbitals are directional and p−p overlap is quite strong as compare to s−s overlap. The order of these in case of s and p is as follows.

therefore order of bond strength is: 2p−2p>2s−2p>2s−2s>1s−1s
