As Total Number of flags = 26 ,

so middle most flag is   \sf=\dfrac{27 + 1}{2}  = 14th

Therefore its side of the middle flag 13 flags are to be placed as shown in figure.

Also distance between two consecutive flags = 2 m

Note : The process of placing one flag is going to place to its postion and returning back to middle flag.

Now,

Distance covered for Flag 1 = 2 + 2 = 4 m

Distance covered by Flag 2 = 4 + 4 = 8 m

Distance covered for Flag 3 = 6 + 6 = 12 m

Distance covered for Flag 13 = 26 + 26 = 52 m

Total distance covered to place these 13 flags is ;

4 + 8 + 12 + . . . . . . . . . . . + 52.

Let,

Total distance covered to place these 13 flags be  \sf = S_n

Therefore,

 \sf S_n =4 + 8 + 12 + . \: . \: . \: . \: . \: . + 52 \\  \\

which is an Arithmetic Series with

  • First Term = a = 4

  • Common difference = d = 4

  • Last term =  \large \sf a_n = 52

  • No. of terms = n = 13

Applying formula of sum of an Arithmetic Series ;

 \\ :\longmapsto \rm S_n =  \frac{n}{2}  \bigg(a + a_n  \bigg) \\  \\

:\longmapsto \rm S_n =  \frac{13}{2}  \bigg( 4 + 52\bigg) \\  \\

:\longmapsto \rm S_n  =  \frac{13}{2}  \times 56 \\ \\

:\longmapsto \rm S_n = 364 \: m

Similarly she will place flag 1' , flag 2' , flag 3' . . . . . flag 13' and will cover a distance of 364 m.

Therefore,

Total distance travelled = 364 × 2 = 728 m.

Now for maximum distance travelled we will calculate distance travelled by the two place flag 13 or flag 13'.

As to place flag 13 aur flag 13' she covers 52 meter as calculated above.

Therefore,

Maximum distance travelled = 52 m.
