Answer:

Let cost of product be 100 Rs.

Discount of 40% = 40/100*100

                           = 40 Rs.

New cost = 100 - 40 = 60 Rs

Discount of 10% on new cost = 10/100*60

                                                = 6 Rs.

Final cost = 60 - 6 = 54 Rs.

If  a discount is to be taken once but the discounted price should be equal to 54 Rs.

Discounted price = 100 -54 = 46 Rs

x/100*100 = 46

x/100 = 46/100

x = 46 %

Therefore the single discount equal to the successive discount will be 46%.
