Answer:

let a number = 100

then,

20percent of 100 is=20

number after discount =80

again,

10percent of 80 is=8

number after discount=72

again,

15percent of 72 is =10.8

number after discount=61.2

now,

100-61.2=38.8

hence single equivalent discount percent is 38.8percent

The successive discounts of 20% , 10% and 15% is equivalent to a single discount of 38.8 %

Solution:

The formula for 3 successive discounts is given as:

Net\ Discount =1 - [ (1 - \frac{x}{100}) \times  (1 - \frac{y}{100}) \times  (1 - \frac{z}{100})] \times 100 \%

The successive discounts of 20% , 10% and 15%

Here,

x = 20

y = 10

z = 15

Therefore,

Net\ Discount =1 - [ (1 - \frac{20}{100}) \times (1 - \frac{10}{100}) \times (1 - \frac{15}{100})] \times 100 \% \\\\Net\ Discount = 1 - [ (1 - 0.2) \times (1-0.1) \times (1-0.15) ] \times 100 \% \\\\Net\ Discount =1 - [ 0.8 \times 0.9 \times 0.85 ] 100 \%\\\\Net\ Discount =[1 -  0.612 ]\times 100 \%\\\\Net\ Discount = 38.8 \%
