Now, substitute this value of x in eq. (i)

x^2 + 56 = 18x
x^2 -18x +56 =0
x^2 -14x-4x +56 =0
x (x-14) - 4 ( x -14) =0
(x-4)(x-14) = 0

x = 4 / 14


Using eq. 1
x +y =18
4 + y = 18
y = 14

Again,

x +y = 18
14 + y = 18
y = 4


So, the two numbers are 4 and 14.
