let the smaller addend be x
thus another addend be 4x
sum of them =5x = 18650
x=18650÷5
=3730

Answer:

Value of smaller addend is 3730.

Step-by-step explanation:

Given :-

  • The sum of two numbers is 18650.
  • One of the addends is four times the other addend.

To find :-

  • Value of smaller addend.

Solution :-

Consider,

  • One addend = x
  • Other addend = y

According to the 1st condition,

  • The sum of two numbers is 18650.

x + y = 18650...............(i)

According to the 2nd condition,

  • One of the addends is four times the other addend.

x = 4y................(ii)

Now take eq(i) and put x = 4y from eq (ii).

x + y = 18650

→ 4y + y = 18650

→ 5y = 18650

→ y = 18650/5

→ y = 3730

Now put y = 3730 in equation (ii)

x = 4y

→ x = 4×3730

→ x = 14920

Therefore, the value of smaller addend is 3730.
