Let us assume, the two numbers are x and y and x < y.
Given:
x + y = 40 --------------1
Also given:
2x = y + 14
2x - y = 14 ------------2
Add equation 1 and equation 2
3x = 54
x = 18
Therefore, y = 40 - x = 40 - 18 = 22
The two numbers are 18 and 22.

Assumption
Larger number be t
Also,
Smaller number be p
Then,
1st Situation :-
p + t = 40 .......... (1)
Also,
2nd Situation :-
2p = t + 14
t = 2p - 14 ............. (2)
Now,
Substitute value of t in (1)
p + (2p - 14) = 40
3p = 40 +14
3p = 54
p = 54/3
p = 18
Now,
Put the value of p in (2) :-
t = 2(18) - 14
t = 36 - 14
t = 22
Hence,
Larger number = 22
Smaller number = 18
