  • The other number = –20.

Given :–

  • The sum of two numbers = –42.
  • The one number = –22.

To Find :–

  • The other number.

Solution :–

Let,

The other number be x.

According to the condition,

The sum of two numbers is –42.

I.e.,

One number + Other number = Sum of both numbers.

We have,

  • One number = –22.
  • Sum of both numbers = –42.

Now,

  \implies - 22 + x = - 42

\implies x = - 42 + 22

\implies x = - 20

Hence,

The other number is –20.

Verification :–

One number + Other number = Sum of both numbers

Now we have,

  • One number = –22.
  • Other number = –20.
  • Sum of both numbers = –42.

Now, substitute this values.

\implies - 22 + ( - 20) = - 42

We know that,

  • Negative × Positive = Negative.

So,

\implies - 22 - 20 = - 42

\implies - 42 = - 42
