1st no=x

2nd no=y

2x+3y=4.(1)

x-y=3(2)

from(2)

x=3+y

putting in(1)

2(3+y)+3y=4

6+2y+3y=4

6+5y=4

5y=4-6

y=-2/5=-0.4

x=3-2/5=3-0.4=2.6

5 and - 2

Step-by-step explanation:

Given -

  • The sum of 2 times a number and 3 times another is 4.
  • The first number minus the second number is 3.

To find -

  • Find the numbers.

Solution -

Let the numbers be 'x' and 'y' .

According to the first condition,

2x + 3y = 4 ---------(i)

Now according to the second condition,

x - y = 3

On multiplying the equation by 2 , we get,

→ 2x - 2y = 6--------(ii)

(i) - (ii)

2x + 3y = 4

- 2x - 2y = -6

y = - 2 [putting in (i)]

2x + 3( - 2) = 4

→ 2x - 6 = 4

→ 2x = 4 + 6

→ 2x = 10

→ x = 5

Therefore , the numbers are 5 and -2.
