The sum of 5 successive odd numbers is 1075. What is the largest of these numbers?
1. 215
2. 223
3. 219
4. 217
Answers
STEP 1: Define the numbers:
Let the smallest number be x
1st number = x
2nd number = x + 2
3rd number = x + 4
4th number = x + 6
5th number = x + 8
......................................................................................................
STEP 2: Form the equation:
The sum of these number is 1075
x + (x + 2) + (x + 4) + (x + 6) + (x + 8) = 1075
......................................................................................................
STEP 3: Solve x:
x + x + 2 + x + 4 + x + 6 + x + 8 = 1075
5x + 20 = 1075
5x = 1055
x = 211
......................................................................................................
STEP 4: Find the numbers:
1st number = x = 211
2nd number = x + 2 = 211 + 2 =213
3rd number = x + 4 = 211 + 4 = 215
4th number = x + 6 = 211 + 6 = 217
5th number = x + 8 = 211 + 8 = 219

Answer: The numbers are 211, 213, 215, 217 and 219
Let us take the first number as ' x '
Then , the second number would be x + 2
Third number = x + 4
Fourth number = x + 6
Fifth number = x + 8
because if we take ' x ' as 1 , which is a odd number, then, the next odd number would be 3, so we have to add 2 to 1 to make it the consequtive odd number, the next odd is 5, we will have add 4.
The numbers are
x , x + 2 , x + 4 , x + 6 , x + 8
If we add them up , we get,
1075
5x + 20 = 1075
5x = 1055
x = 211
First number is 211, second is 211 + 2
third = 211 + 4
fourth = 211 + 6
fifth = 211 + 8
The numbers are :
211 , 213 , 215 , 217 , 219
The largest number is 219
The answer is 219
