x +y = 13

y = 13 -x

x ^2+ (13-x)^2 = 89

x^2 + 169 + x^2 - 26x = 89

2x^2- 26x +169-89 = 0

x^2 - 13x+ 40=0

x^2 -8x - 5x + 40 = 0

x(x-8) -5 (x-8) =0

(x-5)(x-8)= 0

either x=5

or x=8
