and age of son be y

geven their sum is 60years

then  x+y=60-----(1)

If 5 years ago the age of the father was 4 time of his son

5 years ago fathers age = x-5

5 years ago sons age     = y-5

it is given that (x-5) = 4(y-5)

                         x-5  = 4y-20

                       x-4y  = -20+5

                       x-4y  = -15

from equation (1) we know that x+y=60

                                               so    x  = 60-y

on applying the value of x in the equation

                    (60-y)-4y  = -15

                    60-y-4y   = -15

                     60-5y     = -15

                         -5y      = -15-60

                              y    = -75/-5

                              y    = 15

age of son = 15 years

age of father = 60-15 = 45years
