Let the present age of mother be x
and daughter be y

• Sum of their ages are 35

x + y = 35

y = 35 - x ..... ( i )

• Product of their ages is 150

xy = 150 ...... ( ii )

Putting value of y from ( i ) in ( ii )

xy = 150

x ( 35 - x ) = 150

35x - x² = 150

x² - 35x + 150 = 0

x² - 30x - 5x + 150 = 0

x ( x - 30 ) - 5 ( x - 30 ) = 0

( x - 30 ) ( x - 5 ) = 0

• ( x - 30 ) = 0

x = 30

• ( x - 5 ) = 0

x = 5
( neglected coz mother age can't be 5 years )

So , putting value of x as 30 in ( i )

y = 35 - 30

y = 5

Mother's present age is 30 years
Daughter's present age is 5 years
