Five years ago, product of their ages = 124 years....(ii)

Let,

Present age of father = x years

Present age of son = (45−x) years(By using (i))

Now, forming a quadratic equation,

⇒(x−5)(45−x−5)=124(By using (ii))

⇒(x−5)(40−x)=124

⇒40x−x

Step 2: Solve the equation using middle term split method.

−36x−9x−324=0

⇒(x−36)(x−9)=0

⇒x=36,9

Clearly, x cannot be 9,∵ the age of father cannot be less than his son’s age.

∴Present age of father, x=36 years

and, present age of son, (45−x)=9 years

Hence, the present age of father is 36 years and his son is 9 years.
